Fifi & Dancing with the Stars

A dyed-in-the-wool radio fanatic, Fifi was surprised when a TV career emerged. "It was never TV, it was always radio. As a teenager, I loved music - that was my initial hook into radio. On my way to school I always listened to the breakfast show and looked forward to as it was a great start to the day. Radio was just a big part of my life so I went to uni and then went out into regional radio.

"One of the biggest hurdles I had to face initially was that I wasn't anybody. When I moved to Melbourne I would make demo tapes and give them to the program directors and they'd say, 'yep, this is great, keep up the good work', and I'd be thinking, 'yeah, but what's the next step?' It was really frustrating and that's when I gave up and went overseas and nannied for a year in London because I thought, 'radio is what I want to do but I just can't see the entrée. How do you become famous if you can't get on the radio?'"

"Fortunately, Austereo Group Program Director Guy Dobson solved the problem. "He's been such a great mentor to me. He got me into Triple M Sydney nine years ago and I did the 10pm-1am slot. He brought out the best in me. I'm the first to admit I'm not a polished performer. I sometimes might stutter or stammer and I'm not necessarily a great presenter, but he just saw in me something that he wanted to encourage and he told me, 'Just be you, and if you stuff up, you stuff up.'" It'll certainly be interesting to see where Fifi's next 'stuff-up' takes her.
